A spirited but ultimately fruitless encounter saw Blue Eagles and Ekhaya FC share the spoils in a tense 0-0 draw at Nankhaka Stadium.
Despite flashes of brilliance and chances for both sides, the match was marked by missed opportunities and resilient defending, with neither team able to find the breakthrough.
What happened
The match kicked off with urgency as both teams looked eager to seize control early on.
The Cowboys in particular came out with more bite, taking several speculative shots from distance inside the opening quarter of an hour. However, their efforts failed to trouble the Eagles goalkeeper Joshua Waka as accuracy eluded them.
Fast start, no finish
At the 20-minute mark, Ekhaya nearly unlocked the home defense when the ever-lively Chimwemwe Yassin danced through a cluster of defenders with dazzling footwork before threading a precise pass to Clever Chikwata.
The striker surged into the box only to be brought down in what looked like a stonewall penalty—but the referee controversially waved play on, much to coach Enos Chatama’s frustration.
The momentum remained with The Cowboys, and just after the half-hour mark, Stanley Billiat almost gave Ekhaya the lead. His delicate lob over the goalkeeper seemed destined for the net, only for the Eagles captain to clear off the line with a dramatic intervention.
Ekhaya dominated possession for large spells leading into the break, but the deadlock held.
The second half began in stark contrast to the first, slower, more cautious, and lacking the high tempo of earlier exchanges.
Seeking to regain momentum, Chatama then rang the changes in the 59th minute, introducing Wongani Kaponya and Lovemore Mbeta for Mwayi Banda and Yassin.
Missi’s moments of brilliance
However, it was the hosts who came closest shortly after the hour mark. Ian Chinyama fired a thunderous long-range effort that seemed destined for the top corner, but Ekhaya’s goalkeeper Ellias Missi produced a phenomenal fingertip save, risking injury in the process to keep the scores level.
Penalty incident
Ekhaya were then handed a golden opportunity in the 70th minute when substitute Mbeta was brought down in the box.
Alick Lungu stepped up to take the penalty but heartbreakingly had his efforts saved by Waka, a moment that would come to define the match.
Late close call
The hosts nearly punished the miss late on. Chinyama, a constant menace, rattled the upright in the 83rd minute as the match threatened to tilt in Blue Eagles’ favor.
We then responded by bringing on James Lumbe for Billiat, but neither side could summon a winner in the dying moments. Goalless it ended.
What it means
In the end, both sides looked at this as a missed opportunity. Ekhaya created the better chances and even squandered a penalty, while Blue Eagles came close through Chinyama’s brilliance.
A share of the points is perhaps a fair result, but both teams know they will need to be more clinical in the matches ahead.
The result leaves The Cowboys third in the TNM Super League of Malawi standings, now with 13 points from seven matches.
Following this home draw, Blue Eagles remain 6th having played a total of seven matches.

“A fair result considering that a penalty is not a goal. You can miss a penalty, players all over world have missed penalties. Ronaldo and Messi have missed penalties. We have to go back home and reorganize and prepare for future assignments.”
